When Should You Change Your Locks?

How much do security services cost?

If you’ve lost your keys

If you’ve lost your keys, even if you can get another set cut, you may want to change your locks. Whilst a good samaritan may hand them in, they could fall into the wrong hands, and if they can be identified as belonging to your property (perhaps they were found with your wallet), they could put your home security at risk.

When you move into a new house

Whether it’s a new build property, or an existing home, you should make changing your locks a priority. You don’t know who had access to the property previously. From friends and family to construction workers or estate agents, they may still have a key, so it’s better to be safe than sorry and get the locks changed then you can be sure you’re the only one with access.

When somebody moves out

Whether it’s a friend, family member or ex-partner, if the relationship didn’t end on the best terms,  it can be a good idea to get your locks changed. There may be very little reason for them to come back to the property, but it means that if they do, they won’t be able to gain entry without your permission.

After a break-in

An unsettling experience, it can be hard to keep a clear head if you’ve been broken in to, but try to focus on securing the property by replacing any damaged door or window locks as soon as you can. If spare keys were taken during the burglary, change the locks immediately. Whilst lightning may not strike twice, burglars can and do, so be extra vigilant.

For your own peace of mind

Just like TVs and laptops, locks can become outdated. Investing in an upgrade is not only good for your home security, but also for your peace of mind. Knowing your home is protected with the latest mechanism can give you confidence that your property is as secure as it can be.
