With lockdown restrictions easing, whether you’re venturing abroad or taking advantage of a much-needed staycation, making sure your home is safe while you’re away should be a top priority. It can be easy to get caught up in the moment when you’re setting off on a trip, but there are some easy summer security tips you can take in advance and on the day to protect your home.
Keep it quiet
It may be tempting to tell friends and acquaintances that you’re going away, but the less people that know – the better! You never know who’s listening, or who knows who, so tell your nearest and dearest but try to keep those who know to a minimum.
Hide your valuables
If you’re leaving valuables at home while you’re away, such as jewellery or laptops, make sure they’re not left out in the open. Put them away in a drawer or a cupboard, and make sure any items associated with them, like chargers, are hidden away too. The harder they are for someone to find, the less likely they are to be taken should the worst happen and someone breaks into your home. Just remember where you put them…!
Chain up your garden furniture
It may seem a little extreme, but if you have garden furniture, find a way to chain it together and fix it to something secure if you can. Granted, it’s not the easiest thing to steal… but petty thieves will often take anything they can get their hands on. Adding a chain won’t make your furniture thief-proof, but it will make it harder to walk away with, which could be a good enough deterrent in itself.
Check, check and check again
Give yourself extra time before you leave the house to triple check it. From switching off electrical items to checking windows are locked, create a mental or physical tick list and go through it to make sure you’ve covered all bases. Knowing you’ve covered every point will put your mind at ease.
